Causes

There are many causes of dentine hypersensitivity. Even so, the common denominator is the fact that all the causes cause the erosion of the enamel or the recession of the gum. Here are some of the common causes of tooth sensitivity.

• Brushing aggressively: Brushing your teeth aggressively will cause the enamel to wear out thus exposing the dentine. The case is the same when using a hard bristled tooth brush. The nature of your toothbrush and how you brush your teeth may cause tooth sensitivity. You need to use a soft bristled toothbrush and be gentle when brushing.
• Periodontal disease: This is a disease that causes gum recession. Gum recession will cause the root of the teeth to be exposed thus leading to tooth sensitivity.
• Gingivitis: This is a disease that will cause the gums to be sore or inflamed. This causes the gum tissues to expose the tooth root.
• Teeth grinding: Over time, teeth grinding will cause the enamel to wear down.
• Poor dental hygiene: Poor dental hygiene will cause plaque to build up. Cracked teeth will also expose the dentine which will over time cause tooth sensitivity. Poor oral hygiene will cause the tooth enamel to wear down while bacteria build up will cause cavities and expose the inner parts of your teeth.
• Frequent use of acidic foods: Acidic foods cause the enamel to erode.
• Dental procedures: Certain dental procedures such as crown replacements may have short-term effects on tooth sensitivity. The sensitivity will go away in 4 to 6 weeks
