Tooth Sensitivity Symptoms

Causes and Treatment

Tooth sensitivity is a very common dental problem. Most people notice the problem when taking hot or cold foods and beverages. Some people may also experience pain when brushing their teeth. Tooth sensitivity is a condition that affects teeth due to exposed root surfaces. This happens due to gum recession or because the enamel has worn away. The exposed tooth part is known as the dentine. It has pores which run from the surface of the tooth to the nerve. When there is no gum or enamel protection, the dentine will be susceptible to any change in temperature, certain foods as well as activity around the teeth.

Causes

There are many causes of dentine hypersensitivity. Even so, the common denominator is the fact that all the causes cause the erosion of the enamel or the recession of the gum. Here are some of the common causes of tooth sensitivity.

  • Brushing aggressively: Brushing your teeth aggressively will cause the enamel to wear out thus exposing the dentine. The case is the same when using a hard bristled tooth brush. The nature of your toothbrush and how you brush your teeth may cause tooth sensitivity. You need to use a soft bristled toothbrush and be gentle when brushing.
  • Periodontal disease: This is a disease that causes gum recession. Gum recession will cause the root of the teeth to be exposed thus leading to tooth sensitivity.
  • Gingivitis: This is a disease that will cause the gums to be sore or inflamed. This causes the gum tissues to expose the tooth root.
  • Teeth grinding: Over time, teeth grinding will cause the enamel to wear down.
  • Poor dental hygiene: Poor dental hygiene will cause plaque to build up. Cracked teeth will also expose the dentine which will over time cause tooth sensitivity. Poor oral hygiene will cause the tooth enamel to wear down while bacteria build up will cause cavities and expose the inner parts of your teeth.
  • Frequent use of acidic foods: Acidic foods cause the enamel to erode.
  • Dental procedures: Certain dental procedures such as crown replacements may have short-term effects on tooth sensitivity. The sensitivity will go away in 4 to 6 weeks

Symptoms

Tooth sensitivity is often referred to as dentine hypersensitivity. This is a condition characterized by the way teeth react to certain conditions. You are experiencing tooth sensitivity if the tooth/teeth are sensitive to:

  • Sweet and acidic foods
  • Hot and cold drinks and air
  • Physical touch

Tooth sensitivity is at times a condition that appears and disappears after some time. All in all, you need to talk to a dentist Nobleton when the condition persists. The sooner the condition is rectified the better.

Treatment

Treatment for tooth sensitivity will depend on the cause. Proper diagnosis is required to establish the cause. Fillings and other tooth restoration treatments can be used to treat tooth sensitivity. Treatment may include the application of fluoride varnish on exposed areas or a fluoride foam and gel being place in the mouth for 3 to 5 minutes. Bonding agents can be used to cover exposed dentin surfaces.
